NAFDAC Reinforces Ban on Small-Pack Alcoholic Drinks

NAFDAC has confirmed it will enforce the ban on alcoholic drinks sold in sachets or small bottles under 200ml by December 2025. The policy follows a Senate directive and receives backing from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye said the move aims to protect young people from harmful alcohol use. She emphasized the measure is preventive, not punitive, and supported by research linking small-pack alcohol to increased misuse among youths.

NAFDAC will collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Health, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to raise public awareness of the risks associated with small-pack alcohol consumption.

The agency reiterated that citizens’ health and well-being are priorities over short-term economic benefits, urging compliance ahead of the December enforcement deadline.
