May Day: Oborevwori Hails Workers as Backbone of Government
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has stated that workers are the backbone of the government, reaffirming his administration’s unwavering commitment to their welfare despite current economic challenges.
Speaking in Asaba during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebrations, Governor Oborevwori, represented by Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme, called the occasion a moment for reflection and renewed dedication to building a Delta and a Nigeria where all workers are valued, empowered, and rewarded.
The event, themed “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” featured vibrant march-past displays by various trade unions.
He acknowledged the economic pressures facing citizens, including rising living costs and unemployment, but said the state government had introduced initiatives to ease the burden. These include support for small businesses and artisans, along with continued investments in infrastructure to lower transportation costs and encourage trade.

He also announced the launch of a whistleblower policy, complete with a dedicated phone line, to promote transparency and protect workers who report corruption.
In separate remarks, the state chairs of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Martins Bolum, encouraged workers to remain united and resilient. They noted the challenges confronting workers but urged them to stay firm in their efforts to secure their civic rights.
