Man Jailed Six Months for Naira Abuse During Cultural Event
Asaba – Justice F. A. Olubanjo of the Federal High Court in Asaba, Delta State, has convicted and sentenced one Agbanashi Young for abusing the naira during a cultural event.
Young was arraigned on a one-count charge bordering on the spraying and trampling of naira notes, an offence punishable under the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007.
The charge stated that on November 10, 2023, at Akari Etiti Community in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, he tampered with the sum of ₦10,000 in ₦200 denominations by spraying and stepping on the notes while dancing at an event known as “Afor Day.”
He pleaded guilty when the charge was read in court.
Following his plea, prosecution counsel, Francis Jirbo, urged the court to convict and sentence him accordingly, while the defence appealed for leniency, noting that the defendant was remorseful.
In his ruling, Justice Olubanjo sentenced Young to six months imprisonment, with an option of a ₦500,000 fine. The court also directed him to sign an undertaking to be of good behaviour going forward.
Young was arrested by operatives of the anti-graft commission for abusing the naira at the event, after which he was charged to court and subsequently convicted.
