Lady Accused of Poisoning Ex-Boyfriend with Pepper Soup Acquitted

Aisha Suleiman, a woman falsely accused of poisoning five people with pepper soup, has publicly shared her ordeal after investigations confirmed the victims died from inhaling toxic generator fumes.

In October 2024, Aisha’s life was upended when a social media post on X (formerly Twitter) accused her of poisoning her ex-boyfriend and four of his friends. The accusation quickly spread, despite Aisha’s absence from the scene. Upon returning to her community, she was confronted by an angry mob who, believing the claims, tied her up, doused her in petrol, and nearly set her on fire. Authorities intervened just in time, saving her life.

Despite having no connection to the deaths, Aisha was arrested and charged with murder. But after widespread activism from human rights groups and a more thorough investigation, the truth came to light: the deaths were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning from a malfunctioning generator, not by any deliberate act of poisoning.

In an emotional interview with ITV Radio, which aired Friday, Aisha denied ever cooking pepper soup for anyone involved in the incident. She explained that tensions had arisen after she ended her relationship with her late boyfriend, and his father had barred her from visiting their home. On the day of the tragedy, Aisha was in Lyakpi, while the deaths occurred in Afashio, over 100 kilometers away.

“I never cooked for anyone that day. I was miles away, and I loved my ex. This whole thing has been a nightmare. I’ve lost so much,” Aisha said.

Now exonerated, Aisha’s case has sparked widespread calls for justice, with many demanding legal action against the friend who first spread the false claims. Critics argue that the individual’s actions led to Aisha’s public humiliation and near-death experience.

The case highlights the dangers of misinformation and mob justice, with human rights groups urging authorities to take stronger measures against those who spread false accusations.
