Jigawa: 140 Victims Buried in Mass Burial After Explosion
140 victims of the petrol tanker explosion in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, have been laid to rest in a mass burial on Wednesday, October 16.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday evening when the tanker, traveling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, lost control and overturned near Khadija University.
The Jigawa Police Command reported that the explosion was triggered by residents who rushed to collect the spilled petrol after the tanker overturned.
“The driver lost control, leading to the tanker somersaulting and spilling fuel into a drainage ditch,” explained Shiisu Lawan Adam, spokesperson for the Jigawa police. “As a result, residents flocked to scoop up the fuel, which caused the explosion.”
The tanker driver, who sustained injuries in the crash, is currently receiving medical treatment, and investigations are ongoing to determine the complete cause of the disaster.
