Itsekiri Defense Council Backs NDLM, Warns Allies Supporting Chevron
The Itsekiri Defense Council (IDC) has expressed strong support for the Niger Delta Liberation Movement (NDLM) in their efforts to address the alleged oppression of the Itsekiri people.
In a press briefing held on November 28, 2024, in Warri North, the leader of IDC, General Iwedundun Akpakpa, condemned the ongoing mistreatment faced by the Itsekiri community and reaffirmed the IDC’s commitment to supporting NDLM’s advocacy for justice.
General Akpakpa confirmed that IDC will provide intelligence and logistical support to NDLM in their mission, which seeks to end the exploitation and marginalization of the Itsekiri people. The IDC leader stated that the community’s fight is not just about cultural preservation but also about securing fair treatment in the face of systemic injustice.
Akpakpa also issued a warning to political contractors allegedly working in collaboration with multinational oil company Chevron to further the oppression of the Itsekiri people. According to him, individuals involved in such activities would face severe repercussions. The IDC leader stressed that the interests of the Itsekiri people must not be undermined by the personal agendas of corrupt politicians, particularly when those interests threaten the well-being of the Warri Kingdom.
Further reinforcing the IDC’s position, Mr. Amorighoye Aboyowa, the group’s secretary, urged caution against those who might try to discredit the NDLM’s efforts, particularly any political contractors attempting to support Chevron in what the IDC views as the ongoing exploitation of the Itsekiri people. The IDC stated that such individuals, who may seek personal gain by opposing the NDLM, would not be welcomed in the Warri Kingdom.
The group also issued a declaration that all Chevron-related political contractors and their supporters are now considered persona non grata within the Warri Kingdom, signaling a firm stance against any efforts to further marginalize the Itsekiri community.
The IDC made it clear that it is ready to take strong action to ensure the fair treatment of the Itsekiri people. IDC warned that corporations, particularly Chevron, must address the grievances of Itsekiri youths or risk further unrest, including the continued rise of pipeline vandalism.
