Group Sponsors Legacy Award In Honour of Late Justice of Appellate Court
Besides its entertainment spell amongst its lovers, sports is a unifying tool for grassroots development in the community. This is exactly the case in Warri as the Itsekiri Interest Group (IIG), takes centre stage in sponsoring an award category for the Iwere Sports Centre’s 2024 Olu of Warri Community Peace Cup.
The Warri Kingdom pressure group will honour best players of the football tournament through the “Justice Alfred Awala Legacy Awards Category.”
This Legacy Award sponsored by the group in the 9th edition of the annual football tournament would be given in three separate categories; Player of the Tournament, Fair Play Team, who will pocket N50,000 each and the Goalkeeper of the Tournament who will take home N30,000.
Chairman of the group, Comrade Gbubemi Awala, explained that the legacy award is an avenue to encourage young athletes at the grassroot level. “Our sportsmen deserve total support and enough encouragement from individuals, organisations and community leaders”.
He further revealed that the late Justice Alfred Awala, his father was a grassroots man and lover of sports. His love for sport was birthed in secondary school at Hussey College Warri and matured at the University of London where he obtained his Law degree before attending the Nigerian Law school.
Comrade Awala said the Itsekiri Interest Group saw the need to honour Late Justice Alfred Awala (JCA) through the award category due to his legacy as the first and only Itsekiri Judge to be appointed as a Justice of the Federal Court of Appeal by former President, Olusegun Obasanjo in 2006.
He further stated that the initiative will help to showcase raw talents from Warri to the world. We want the world to be aware of Warri Kingdom best talents when it comes to sports. This will also attract investors and development to the land,” he said.
He concluded by calling on patriotic Nigerians and people in diaspora to key into community sports.
The Olu of Warri Community Peace Cup 9th Edition hosted by Orugbo community commenced on July 27 and will have its final on August 11, at Nana College, Warri, Delta state.
The organisers of the event has earmarked N1,000,000 as the Prize Money for the winning team.
