Ganduje Appeals To Tinubu To Clear APC’s N8.9bn Election Debt

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and assist in settling the party’s N8.9 billion election-related debts.

During a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Wednesday, February 26, Ganduje revealed that the APC’s accounts had been garnished due to unpaid legal fees arising from pre-election and post-election cases involving President Tinubu, APC governors, and legislators.

The meeting, which followed a national caucus gathering at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, was attended by key party figures including Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.

However, some prominent APC leaders, including former President Muhammadu Buhari, ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, were notably absent.

Ganduje disclosed that the party’s National Legal Adviser, Prof. Abdul Kareem Kana (SAN), has been exploring alternative dispute resolution methods to alleviate the financial strain, but stressed the urgency of government assistance.

“The current National Working Committee (NWC) inherited debts and legal liabilities totalling N8,987,874,663. These debts are linked to legal matters related to pre-election, election cases, and appeals concerning legislative, governorship, and presidential elections. Some of our accounts remain garnisheed,” Ganduje stated.

Furthermore, the APC chairman appealed to Tinubu for assistance in securing a plot of land in the Federal Capital Territory for a new party secretariat, citing the inadequacy of the current facility for a ruling party.

In response, President Tinubu acknowledged the issue and reassured party leaders that the government would look into possible solutions.

The NEC also passed a vote of confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, with former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole praising the administration’s economic reforms.
