FG Approves 112 as Nigeria’s Unified Emergency Number

The Federal Government has approved the adoption of 112 as Nigeria’s unified national emergency number, aimed at improving response time and coordination during crises. The decision was reached at the 157th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired virtually by Vice President Kashim Shettima. The move is part of broader efforts to eliminate delays linked to fragmented emergency systems across the country.

A statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, confirmed that NEC also approved the creation of a multi-agency implementation committee. The committee, to be jointly led by the Office of the Vice President and the Nigerian Communications Commission, will oversee the nationwide rollout and ensure effective coordination among relevant agencies.

The Council further directed the Ministry of Finance to fast-track the release of funds for key national projects, including the rehabilitation of police training institutions. This is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen internal security infrastructure and improve operational capacity across law enforcement agencies.

Speaking during the meeting, Vice President Shettima stressed that adopting a single emergency number would enhance public access to urgent services during incidents such as accidents, crimes, medical emergencies, and disasters. He added that the initiative would unify existing response mechanisms, improve coordination among agencies, and build public trust in emergency systems nationwide.
