FG Adds Plumbing, Hairstyling, Robotics to Basic Education Curriculum

The Federal Government has announced a major expansion of the Basic Education curriculum, introducing a range of 15 new trades and practical subjects aimed at boosting students’ skills and employability. This development is part of ongoing reforms designed to equip the youth with essential competencies for a rapidly changing economy.

In a statement issued by the National Orientation Agency (NOA), the new subjects are intended to provide students with hands-on training in a variety of fields, enhancing their readiness for the workforce. The new courses, set to begin in January 2025, will be integrated into the curriculum for both primary and junior secondary school students nationwide.

The subjects include practical trades such as plumbing, tiling and floor works, and POP installation, alongside creative industries like hairstyling, makeup, and event decoration and management. Other technical skills added to the curriculum include GSM repair, solar installation and maintenance, and the installation of CCTV, intercoms, and satellite/TV antennas. Additionally, students will gain knowledge in areas like garment making, bakery and confectioneries, interior design, and digital literacy, including IT and robotics.

The government stated that these subjects will provide students with an opportunity to learn both traditional and modern skills, ranging from agriculture and livestock farming to cutting-edge technology in the form of robotics and digital systems.

“The aim is to equip our youth with the practical tools and knowledge to thrive in today’s competitive job market. These additions will not only improve employability but also foster entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency,” said the NOA statement.

The overhaul of the curriculum comes as part of a broader effort to modernize education and address the growing demand for skilled labor in key sectors. With an increasing emphasis on vocational training, the government hopes these reforms will help address unemployment and enhance the country’s overall economic development.

The National Orientation Agency further stated that training programs will be developed for teachers to ensure they are equipped to deliver the new content effectively.
