Federal Court Reserves Ruling in Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan Suspension Case

Federal High Court Abuja, has postponed its judgment in a suit brought by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against her suspension from the Senate.

The Federal High Court in Abuja announced it would deliver its ruling on 27 June 2025, following a hearing on Tuesday, May 13.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is contesting a six-month suspension imposed by the Senate in February. The suspension followed a report by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, which accused her of misconduct and disrupting parliamentary proceedings.

The senator argues that the action violates an existing court order issued by Justice Obiora Egwuatu, which barred punitive measures against her pending the outcome of ongoing legal proceedings.

Tuesday’s session was presided over by Justice Binta Nyako, who also heard two separate contempt applications. One was filed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, and the other by Akpoti-Uduaghan against Akpabio and the Senate.

Akpabio alleges that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan breached a court directive issued on 4 April by making public comments on the case, including a post on Facebook which he claims flouted a media gag order.

His legal representative, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, argued that the senator’s interviews and a “satirical letter” published online contravened the court’s instruction for all parties to avoid public commentary while the matter remains sub judice.

The court is expected to rule on the primary suit and contempt proceedings next month.
