Ex-Militant Leaders Fight Over Pipeline Security Contract

Tensions are escalating among ex-militant leaders in the Niger Delta over multimillion-naira pipeline protection contracts, involving the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, and ex-militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, better known as Tompolo.

The dispute centers on a pipeline surveillance contract awarded to a company in which the Olu of Warri has financial interests, and the renewal of Tompolo’s $144 million contract with Tantita Security Services, which has held the contract since the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The conflict has been exacerbated by uncertainties regarding the future of these contracts, especially following a recent leadership shakeup at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NPCL). President Bola Tinubu’s removal of Mele Kyari as the Group Chief Executive Officer and the appointment of a new team have left the renewal and distribution of these crucial contracts in question.

Sources indicate that Tompolo’s Tantita Security Services, which has been responsible for pipeline surveillance, coastal protection, and securing critical infrastructure in the Niger Delta, had its contract renewed in October 2024. Tantita hopes to secure another renewal in 2025. However, some ex-militant leaders, who believe they are entitled to a share of the lucrative deals tied to both the Olu of Warri’s company and Tompolo’s, have expressed dissatisfaction.

Since early 2025, these disaffected leaders have reportedly been attempting to instigate unrest, raising concerns about potential violence in the region. With the power shift at NNPCL adding further uncertainty, the future of these key contracts and the peace in the Niger Delta remains precarious.
