EFCC Vows to Investigate Tompolo Over Alleged Naira Abuse
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has pledged to investigate former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, over naira abuse following public outcry over a video that shows him engaging in naira abuse.
The anti-corruption agency in a post shared on Monday, May 12 via their social media handles confirmed it would look into the incident, stating: “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer.”
Footage circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) shows Tompolo celebrating his 54th birthday, with a man seen spraying ₦1,000 notes as he dances. The video, believed to have been filmed in April, has drawn criticism from Nigerians, with many calling for action from the EFCC.
The post, shared by X user Harrison A (@harreceipts), on Sunday, May 11, he directly challenged the agency:
“Here is Tompolo mutilating the Naira. I know the eyes of that your eagle will suddenly go blind but I am bringing this to your attention publicly so the whole world will see you are a shameless agency with double standards.”

The incident had reignited debate over the EFCC’s approach to enforcing currency abuse laws, with critics accusing the agency of selective enforcement and showing favouritism to powerful individuals.
Under Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act (2007, as amended), the spraying, dancing on, or stepping on of the naira during social functions is a criminal offence, punishable by fines, imprisonment, or both.
The EFCC has previously taken action against several celebrities and public figures for similar offences. Businessman Emeka ‘E-Money’ Okonkwo, actress Iyabo Ojo, and comedian Ayo ‘AY’ Makun have all been investigated. In April, social media personality Idris Olarewaju Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, was sentenced to six months in prison for naira abuse.
However, the response to Tompolo’s case has led to further scrutiny of the EFCC’s operations, with some alleging that his political connections and influence in the Niger Delta may be a factor in the agency’s previous silence.
The EFCC has not provided a timeline for the investigation but reiterated its commitment to upholding the law, regardless of an individual’s status.
