Delta Police Detain Officers in Asaba Over Extortion

The Delta State Police Command has detained officers attached to C Division, Asaba, over allegations of extortion involving a traveller who was reportedly forced to make payment through a Point of Sale (POS) operator within the station. The incident, which occurred on April 15, was exposed by human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who accused some officers of using POS operators to collect proceeds from illegal activities.

The victim, identified as Ugochukwu from Anambra State, was said to be travelling to Lagos via the Asaba airport when he was delayed by the officers. The delay caused him to miss his flight, after which he allegedly paid ₦51,500, including transaction charges, before being released. He reportedly incurred further expenses securing another ticket and hotel accommodation.

The police command condemned the incident, noting that the officers involved have been identified, arrested, and detained. They are expected to appear before the Commissioner of Police on April 16, 2026, for disciplinary proceedings, while the Force Headquarters has directed that they be presented in Abuja on April 20. Police spokesman Bright Edafe warned that any officer found culpable would face sanctions.
