Delta Assembly Rejects Petition Over Withheld Salary

The Delta State House of Assembly has rejected a petition by Apitikori Oghenebrorhien, who claimed his salary was wrongly stopped and his name removed from the state government’s payroll.

The House made the decision on Tuesday, May 20 after reviewing a report from its Public Petitions Committee. The report was presented by the committee chairman, Hon. Matthew Omonade, during a session led by Speaker Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor.

Omonade explained that the committee looked at evidence from both Mr Oghenebrorhien and the Accountant General’s office. Their findings showed that Oghenebrorhien had been absent from work for 11 years and did not respond to several official queries. This, according to the Delta State Public Service Rules, is a serious offence.

Based on these findings, the committee recommended that the petition be dismissed. They also advised that the Accountant General apply the proper punishment for absenteeism to discourage similar behaviour among other civil servants.

The Assembly went further by agreeing to an amendment from Hon. Oboro Preyor, who asked the Delta State Civil Service Commission to continue investigating Oghenebrorhien over an alleged ₦480 million embezzlement case.
