Coroner Links Mohbad’s Death to Medical Negligence
A Lagos coroner has ruled out foul play in the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad, but recommended the prosecution of an auxiliary nurse who administered an injection to him without a doctor’s prescription.
Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi delivered the findings on Friday at the Magistrate Court in Ikorodu, Lagos. She stated that the actions of the nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, were unlawful and professionally negligent.
The court called for her prosecution by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions for gross medical negligence.
Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, died in September 2023 under unclear circumstances, sparking widespread outrage and speculation across Nigeria.
The coroner criticised Mohbad’s father for the singer’s swift burial without an autopsy, and also questioned his wife’s decision to treat him at home rather than seeking urgent hospital care.
Magistrate Shotobi also noted that allegations Mohbad made against music executive Naira Marley and his associate Sam Larry prior to his death should be properly investigated, in light of evidence presented during the inquiry.
She condemned the spread of misinformation online, saying social media influencers had misrepresented facts about the proceedings in a way that threatened the court’s integrity.
The court recommended broader reforms to Nigeria’s healthcare system and called on law enforcement agencies to improve their response to public safety concerns.
