CAC to Enforce Ban on Unregistered PoS Terminals Nationwide
The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has set January 1, 2026, as the deadline for all Point-of-Sale (PoS) operators to regularise their businesses, warning that unregistered agents will no longer be allowed to function in the country. The commission said the directive follows a surge in operators running without registration, contrary to CAMA 2020 and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Agent Banking Regulations.
To curb the trend, the CAC announced a nationwide enforcement exercise targeting non-compliant operators. It noted that some fintech firms have enabled the practice, creating what it called a risky environment for Nigeria’s financial system and for citizens who rely on PoS services for daily transactions.
Under the new measure, security agencies will shut down or seize unregistered PoS terminals, while fintech companies linked to unapproved operations will be placed on a watchlist and reported to the CBN. The commission advised all operators to complete their registration immediately, stressing that compliance is compulsory.
The CAC said the enforcement move forms part of broader efforts to sanitise the financial services space. It added that strengthening regulatory adherence will help protect users and investors while promoting transparency and stability across the sector.
