Delta Govt Suspends Loans for Overburdened Civil Servants

The Delta State Government has halted the approval of staff loans for civil servants whose salaries are heavily affected by deductions. The directive was issued by the Head of Service, Dr. Mininim Oseji.

The order followed an unscheduled visit to the Delta State Computer Centre in Asaba, where payroll records and attendance logs were reviewed. The government said the move was aimed at protecting workers from financial strain and improving payroll transparency.

Concerns were raised over absenteeism, excessive deductions and the continued retention of casual staff. As part of corrective measures, payroll formats will now clearly reflect gross salaries rather than combined allowances.

Permanent Secretaries and Directors of Finance across ministries were cautioned against unjustified deductions, with warnings of sanctions for future violations. The Computer Centre was also directed to submit monthly wage bills promptly.

The inspection formed part of broader efforts to strengthen audit processes and curb payroll-related abuse within the state civil service.
