Delta Police Link Rising Murder Cases to Drug Abuse

The Delta State Commissioner of Police has expressed concern over the increasing rate of murder cases, attributing many of them to drug abuse among youths. He cited a recent killing in Ogwashi-Uku as an example of a preventable tragedy.

According to police records, a 20-year-old man was stabbed to death in his sleep on January 8, 2026, along Poly Road near Adaigbo Filling Station. Investigations revealed that the suspect, the victim’s brother, allegedly committed the act after consuming illicit substances.

The suspect, identified as Aliyu Haman, was arrested, while the weapon used in the attack was recovered. Police detectives were immediately deployed to the scene following the report.

The Commissioner assured residents of sustained security efforts and acknowledged the support of the state government. He also disclosed that between January 8, 2026, and the present, the command recovered 11 firearms, 80 rounds of ammunition and arrested several suspects linked to murder, cultism and sexual offences.
