Lawyer Arrested After Fatal Shooting at Masquerade Display in Rivers
A lawyer identified as Barrister Akpudi Ikechukwu has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred during a masquerade display in Omoku, Rivers State. The shooting, which took place in the early hours of January 19, 2026, led to one person’s death and left eight others injured. The incident reportedly involved a clash between the masquerading youths and the lawyer, along with personnel from the Nigeria Forest Guards.
CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police, confirmed that Barrister Ikechukwu and two others were arrested following the violent altercation. The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which occurred after a confrontation escalated into gunfire. Nine individuals from the masquerade group were struck by bullets, and one victim, identified as Obulo, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Rivers State Police Command has assured the public that all those found culpable in the incident will face justice. A joint security force consisting of police and military personnel has been deployed to the area to maintain peace, and the Area Commander has met with local youth leaders to calm tensions and prevent further violence.
