Labour MPs Urge Starmer to Consider Under-16 Social Media Ban

Pressure is mounting on UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer after more than 60 Labour MPs urged him to consider banning children under 16 from accessing social media platforms. The lawmakers raised concerns over the impact of online content on young people’s mental health, learning, and social development.

In an open letter, the MPs argued that existing safeguards are inadequate and pointed to Australia’s recent under-16 social media ban as a model worth considering. They warned that unchecked access is fueling anxiety, distraction, and social withdrawal among children.

Starmer responded by saying the government is reviewing all available options as part of broader online safety reforms. The debate is expected to intensify with an upcoming House of Lords vote on proposals to introduce age-rating systems for social media use.

The MPs also cautioned that the UK risks lagging behind countries such as France, Denmark, and New Zealand, which are exploring similar restrictions to strengthen child online protection.
