Lecturers, Readers Get New Allowances as FG, ASUU Sign Deal
The Federal Government has approved a new monthly allowance of about ₦140,000 for professors in Nigerian universities following a fresh agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
Minister of Education Tunji Alausa announced the development during a television interview, explaining that the new benefit applies to full-time professors and readers, with readers receiving roughly ₦70,000 monthly.
The agreement replaces the long-standing 2009 FG–ASUU pact and includes a 40 per cent salary adjustment for university lecturers, alongside the introduction of a professorial cadre allowance.
According to the minister, funding has already been secured for the package, which also covers nine enhanced academic allowances shared between universities and the federal government.
