“No More Business As Usual”, Olu of Warri Warns Chevron, Others Over Decades of Neglect

The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR has issued a strong warning to Chevron and other International Oil Companies operating in Itsekiriland, declaring that it will no longer be business as usual after more than six decades of neglect and underdevelopment of the community.

Ogiame Atuwatse III made the statement at a press briefing held in Jakpa Town, Warri North after touring several riverine communities including those in the Warri River axis, Benin River axis, Ugborodo axis, and coastal settlements.

The monarch expressed deep frustration over the continued poverty and marginalization of the Itsekiri people despite their land producing vast wealth for Nigeria. He condemned previous regulatory failures, oil company tactics, and internal betrayals that have allowed this neglect to persist.

Directly addressing Chevron, the monarch acknowledged the company’s decision to remain onshore while others retreated offshore but cautioned that the community’s peaceful nature should not be mistaken for weakness. “Before your arrival, our people lived better lives than they do today,” he stated, emphasizing that six decades of broken promises and neglect have pushed his people to the limits of patience.

He outlined urgent demands for infrastructure, clean water, healthcare, education, and meaningful employment for locals. The Olu made it clear that all contracts and development efforts must be executed with transparency and accountability, and anyone failing the community, regardless of origin, would face consequences.

“This is not about contracts for a few. It is about restoring dignity to all,” he emphasized.

The monarch called on both government and oil companies to forge a new path based on justice and true partnership; one that will leave a positive legacy for future generations in Itsekiriland.
