The Federal Government has declared Thursday, December 25 and Friday, December 26, 2025, as public holidays to mark Christmas and Boxing Day, as well as Thursday, January 1, 2026, for the New Year celebration.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajayi. The minister said the holidays were approved on behalf of the Federal Government.
Dr Tunji-Ojo extended goodwill messages to Christians in Nigeria and across the world, and to all Nigerians, noting that the festive season provides a time to reflect on values such as love, peace, humility and sacrifice, which are vital for national unity and harmony.
He urged citizens to pray for peace, security and development in the country, while also calling on Nigerians to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies to ensure a peaceful celebration. The minister wished Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
