The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned that it may join demonstrations planned by frustrated contractors and pensioners unless the federal government settles mounting debts. The party’s caution comes after contractors gathered at the Federal Ministry of Finance to demand payment for completed projects, while pension unions prepare protests of their own.
ADC spokesperson Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi said the situation raises troubling questions about the nation’s financial management, noting claims that more than N500 billion owed to contractors remains outstanding. He also pointed to pension adjustments and palliative allowances approved over a year ago that retirees have yet to receive.
The Coalition of Federal Pensioners has announced plans for a nationwide action on 8 December, warning it could escalate into a dramatic “naked protest” if the government continues to delay their entitlements. The ADC said it stands firmly with these groups as they push for long-awaited payments.
Abdullahi urged the government to clear all arrears to prevent deeper hardship for retirees, contractors, and the small businesses tied to government projects. He added that the party may take to the streets alongside the affected groups if urgent steps are not taken.
