Rising Tensions Hit UPU Ahead of Leadership Vote

Mounting allegations and internal friction have thrown the Urhobo Progress Union’s upcoming leadership election into fresh uncertainty. What should have been a routine transition has instead exposed deep cracks within the 24 Urhobo kingdoms, with accusations of manipulation and political influence dominating public discourse.

The incumbent leadership is facing harsh criticism from various groups, including diaspora organisations and community elders, who argue that the UPU has drifted from its core purpose. Concerns have also grown over suspected government backing for the current administration, prompting repeated calls for neutrality from authorities and traditional rulers.

Screening issues have further complicated the process. Two frontline contenders, Chief Simeon Ohwofa and Dr. Brown Umukoro, were thrust into controversy after their nomination documents were briefly unaccounted for, raising questions about transparency. Analysts say the situation has been made worse by the electoral committee’s failure to publish the full list of accredited delegates.

Observers warn that the unfolding tensions pose a major test for the 93-year-old organisation. As attention turns to the polls, many Urhobo stakeholders insist that only a transparent and credible process can prevent deeper divisions and restore confidence in the UPU’s leadership structure.
