Two Dead, One Injured As Police Chase Ends In Tragic Crash In Delta

The ever-busy Otovwodo Junction in Ughelli, Delta State, turned into a scene of tears and chaos on Monday, after a police chase ended in tragedy, leaving two people dead on the spot and another battling for life.

What began as a routine stop-and-search by operatives of Operation Delta Sweep reportedly escalated into a deadly pursuit that cost innocent lives, leaving residents in deep shock.

Eyewitnesses said the victims were pedestrians going about their normal activities when a Mercedes-Benz GLK, being chased at high speed by the police team, lost control and rammed into them near Union Bank on the East-West Road.

According to witnesses, the pursuit started from Agbarha Road before spilling into the main expressway.

It was gathered that one of the car’s occupants was arrested, while others reportedly escaped.

The incident has sparked outrage across social media, with residents blaming both the police and the fleeing suspects for the needless loss of lives.

Many accused law enforcement agents of displaying recklessness during pursuits, especially in densely populated areas.

Others lamented the rise in fatal accidents linked to drivers trying to evade police checkpoints.

When reached for comments, the Delta State Police Command, through its spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, said he was not aware of the incident.

“I am not aware of this. Some persons said it’s Delta sweep, please reach out to them if it’s true or not,” he stated via WhatsApp.

Rebranded from Delta Hawk in 2024, Operation Delta Sweep is a partnership between the Delta State Government  security agencies, including the police.

Sadly, this is not the first time such incidents have occurred in Ughelli and other parts of Delta State. Similar high-speed chases have ended in fatalities, prompting renewed calls for restraint and reform in police operations.
