House of Reps Orders Nationwide Shutdown of Porn Websites

The Nigerian House of Representatives has directed a total shutdown of all pornographic websites in the country. The directive, issued during a plenary session on Tuesday, mandates the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to enforce the immediate closure of these sites.

The motion to block access to internet websites hosting pornographic content was introduced by Dalhatu Tafoki, the member representing the Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa Federal Constituency. Tafoki described the move as a crucial step to “protect societal values.”

He expressed concern over the growing prevalence of cyber pornography, noting that it has become a global issue. He further emphasized that Nigeria, being a highly religious nation, has strong cultural and religious prohibitions against nudity and obscenity. Tafoki pointed out that many countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have already passed laws banning pornography.

“Psychologists and sociologists around the world have warned about the severe psychological and sociological consequences of creating and consuming pornographic content,” Tafoki said. He cited concerns such as the promotion of adultery, prostitution, promiscuity, addiction, and a shift in attitudes towards family values.

The motion was adopted by the House, with a voice vote in favor of the directive. The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abass, reiterated that sanctions would be imposed on internet service providers who fail to comply with the order. Also, the House has tasked its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance to ensure the implementation of the shutdown, with a report due in four weeks.
