DESTMA Warns Traders Against Roadside Trading in Delta State
The Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA) has issued a stern warning to traders in the state to cease conducting business on major roads, a practice that poses significant safety risks. The warning was delivered by the Chairman of the DESTMA Governing Board, Chief Peter Idion, during a sensitization program held at the Baleke Market in Agbor.
Chief Idion stressed the commitment of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to the safety of all residents in the state, highlighting the governor’s directive to DESTMA to ensure that the major roads remain free from obstructions and traffic congestion. He stated that trading on the roads exposes traders and road users to potential accidents and safety hazards, urging traders to abandon this dangerous practice.
The sensitization event, which was attended by various stakeholders, including Agbor Palace Chiefs and local officials, was aimed at educating the public on the importance of maintaining clear roads. Chiefs Louis Usifoh, Erere Ojemudia, Gideon Okobia, and others from the Agbor Royal Palace condemned the practice of trading in the middle of roads, advising traders to relocate their businesses to safer, designated areas.
The chiefs also commended DESTMA’s efforts in restoring order and safety to the state’s roadways, pledging their full support for the agency’s initiative. They commended Chief Idion for involving key community leaders in the process, reinforcing the importance of collaboration for achieving positive outcomes.
Also, stakeholders such as Mr. Fortunate Agholor, Officer in Charge of Revenue, and Mr. Famous Abaye, Chairman of the Committee on Environment, both from Ika South Local Government Council, expressed their commitment to working with DESTMA to better manage traffic in Agbor’s major markets and roads.
During the sensitization program, traders, represented by Mrs. Agowonyi and Market Master Mr. Tony Emegha, assured DESTMA of their full compliance with the traffic regulations moving forward.
Following the awareness campaign, Chief Idion and his team took immediate action, focusing on clearing the heavily congested Baleke and Akpenyi Streets in Agbor. The operation, which lasted over two hours, resulted in a significant decongestion of the area a notable achievement considering the previous challenges.
Motorists and road users in Agbor expressed their appreciation for DESTMA’s swift action in ensuring effective traffic management.
