Governor Okpebholo Condemns Deadly Clashes, Orders Additional Security
The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has condemned a series of violent attacks that have left 24 people dead in the state.
The first incident took place in Gbelemotin, a farming community in Ovia South-West Local Government Area, where a clash broke out between cocoa farmers and suspected produce thieves. While the Edo State Police Command reported seven fatalities, local sources claim 22 people were killed. The conflict, which began on Thursday night, escalated the following morning when supporters of the deceased launched a counterattack, resulting in further casualties.
In a separate incident, two residents of the Okpekpe community in Etsako East Local Government Area, Batemue Philip Ebo and Christopher Bello, were reportedly killed on Monday by suspected herders.
Governor Okpebholo, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, expressed his outrage over the attacks, pledging to hold those responsible accountable. “We will not tolerate any form of violence or lawlessness in Edo State,” he said. “The attack on farming communities in Ovia South West, which resulted in 22 deaths and extensive damage to properties, is deeply concerning.”
The Governor also ordered the deployment of additional security forces to the affected areas and assured the public that support would be provided to the affected communities. He called for calm and urged residents to go about their normal activities, reassuring them that efforts are being made to bring the situation under control.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all Edo State residents,” Governor Okpebholo stated. “We will work tirelessly to prevent such incidents in the future and bring those responsible to justice.”
