‘You Dey Vex, We Know’ ‘Forgive and Forget’ -MTN Apologises to Nigerians Over Hike in Data

Nigeria’s largest telecommunications operator, MTN, has issued a public apology to its customers after a massive backlash over a sudden 200% increase in the price of its popular 15GB data bundle. Subscribers, who were previously paying N2,000 for the weekly plan, were stunned to find the cost had risen to N6,000, causing frustration and outrage across social media.

The price hike, which took many users by surprise, quickly became a hot topic on platforms like Twitter and Facebook, with many expressing their dissatisfaction over the increased cost. In response, MTN took to social media on Thursday to acknowledge the upset, addressing their customers in a lighthearted yet apologetic manner.

In a statement, MTN wrote, “To our 15G digital bundle lovers. You dey vex. We know. We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200% increase on your favourite digital bundle. We could share several reasons, and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story. We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.”

The message, which was aimed at calming the growing discontent among users, also asked for forgiveness, with MTN adding, “In this love season, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die and we will never stop showing you how much. Let’s continue our relationship. Thank you for your understanding.”

The price hike follows a broader industry shift, as telecom companies react to a recent 50% tariff increase approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in January. While MTN has led the price rise, industry watchers expect Airtel and Globacom to follow suit.

The increase has not been without controversy, as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly condemned the tariff hikes, calling for an immediate reversal. The NLC has argued that the price hikes put additional pressure on Nigerian consumers, especially during difficult economic times.
