No Ethnic Clash in Warri North, Council Boss Dismisses Rumours, Calls for Calm

The Executive Chairman of Warri North Local Government Area, Hon. Festus Ashima, has dismissed circulating rumours of an alleged communal crisis between the Itsekiri and Ijaw communities in Koko and other parts of the LGA, describing them as false, misleading and the handiwork of mischief makers.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, June 7, 2026, Ashima said his attention had been drawn to recent social media reports suggesting rising tensions and a possible outbreak of violence in parts of Warri North. He, however, assured residents that there was no threat of any communal clash in the area.

According to him, security assessments and consultations with traditional rulers, community leaders and relevant security agencies confirmed that the reports were “entirely unfounded” and intended to create panic among residents.

He alleged that the rumours were being spread by criminal elements seeking to destabilize communities, force residents to abandon their homes and businesses, and exploit fear for unlawful activities such as vandalism and looting.

“The misinformation has caused unnecessary tension and disrupted the peace we have worked so hard to maintain,” the chairman stated, adding that there would be no breakdown of law and order in any part of the local government.

Ashima further reaffirmed that Warri North remains a peaceful and united area where grievances among individuals or communities would continue to be resolved through dialogue, mediation and peaceful engagement rather than violence.

He urged residents, including traders, fishermen, farmers, students and business owners, to remain calm and go about their lawful activities without fear. He also called on the public to remain vigilant and report anyone spreading fake news or attempting to incite violence to security agencies.
