Delta CP Orders Tight Security Around Worship Centres, Schools, Amid Rising Security Concerns
Against the backdrop of growing security concerns across the country, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has directed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to strengthen security around churches, mosques, schools, correctional facilities, and other critical public institutions across the state.
The directive was issued during a strategic security meeting with senior officers of the Delta State Police Command, where issues relating to public safety, discipline, and professional conduct were reviewed.
The meeting brought together members of the Command Management Team, Area Commanders, Tactical Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Departments.
Addressing the officers, the police commissioner stressed the importance of maintaining a high level of vigilance in view of prevailing security challenges across the country. He urged commanders to take proactive measures to safeguard lives and property, particularly in places that attract large gatherings.
CP Oyeniyi also warned officers against acts of indiscipline, misconduct, and violations of professional ethics, emphasizing that erring personnel would be held accountable for their actions. He further noted that supervising officers would bear responsibility for the conduct of officers under their command.
The commissioner expressed concern over what he described as insufficient engagement between some police divisions and the communities they serve. He directed all DPOs to strengthen relationships with traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, and other stakeholders, stressing that effective policing depends largely on public cooperation and timely intelligence sharing.
He maintained that sustained community engagement remains one of the most effective tools for preventing crime and addressing security threats before they escalate, urging officers to remain committed to professionalism and service in the discharge of their duties.
