Extrajudicial Killing: Court Remands Dismissed ASP Nuhu, Four Others Over Oghenemine’s Death

A High Court in Asaba, Delta State, has remanded dismissed Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and four other former police officers at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre over the extrajudicial killing of Oghenemine.

The officers were remanded on Monday, June 1, after being arraigned in court over Oghenemine’s death, which occurred in Effurun on April 26. The incident sparked nationwide outrage after a video of the shooting went viral on social media.

The Inspector-General of Police had earlier approved the dismissal and prosecution of Usman and the other officers involved in the incident.

Oghenemine was shot by Usman, who was attached to the Area Command in Effurun, while he was handcuffed and pleading for his life. Footage of the incident circulated widely online, drawing condemnation from Nigerians and renewed concerns over police brutality.

According to reports, Oghenemine was arrested while attempting to waybill a parcel said to contain a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.

In the viral video recorded moments before the shooting, he was seen crying and pleading with officers while offering to take them to a location in Sapele where the person who allegedly sent the parcel could be found, insisting he had no knowledge of its contents.
