Oborevwori Approves New Minimum Wage

Delta state Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori has confirmed that the new minimum wage will be implemented for workers in the state starting this October.

The Secretary to the State Government, Kingsley Emu made the announcement on Wednesday, October 16. The steering committee included representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC).

Emu revealed the delay by the National Income Salaries and Wages Commission in sending the chart was why the committee did not implement the new minimum wage initially.

Goodluck Ofobruku, chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on the other hand, praised Governor Oborevwori for his swift approval of the 2024 minimum wage. Ofobruku noted that the decision has significantly eased the work of labour representatives in the region.

This development comes after President Bola Tinubu signed a bill into law on July 29, 2024, establishing a national minimum wage of 70,000 Naira, following its passage through the National Assembly.
