Niger Delta Boat Operators Get Safety Support

Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta

For thousands living in the Niger Delta’s riverine communities, boats remain the only link to healthcare, schools, and livelihoods.

But unsafe practices and poor emergency response systems have continued to put lives at risk on the waterways.

To tackle the problem, the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND), in partnership with the Nigerian Navy and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), organised a two-day Boat Safety, Security and Risk Management Training in Warri for boat operators and jetty workers from Delta, Bayelsa, and Ondo states.

“This intervention is about protecting lives,” said Col. Abdulfatai Mohammed (Rtd.), PIND’s Security Manager.

“By strengthening the skills, awareness, and accountability of boat operators, we are addressing one of the most critical risk points in riverine operations.”

Participants received training on emergency response, navigation risks, maritime security, and incident reporting through practical demonstrations and simulation exercises.

“Safety on the waterways is a shared responsibility,” a Nigerian Navy representative said.

“Trainings like this improve preparedness and support safer navigation across riverine communities.”

PIND said the initiative is part of a broader effort to improve long-term marine safety standards and reduce avoidable accidents across the Niger Delta.
