Too Much Salt, Too Much Risk: Groups Warn Nigerians Over Rising Health Crisis
As World Salt Awareness Week 2026 is observed globally, three Nigerian organisations — Network for Health Equity and Development (NHED), Centre for Communication and Social Impact (CCSI), and Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) — have raised concerns over Nigerians’ excessive salt consumption and its growing impact on public health.
The groups said many Nigerians consume nearly double the salt level recommended by the World Health Organisation, increasing the risk of hypertension, stroke, heart disease and kidney failure.
They called on the government to enforce stricter regulations on processed foods, introduce clearer warning labels and intensify public awareness campaigns on healthy eating.
The organisations also urged Nigerians to reduce their intake of added salt and seasoning cubes, eat more fresh foods and use natural spices such as ginger and turmeric in preparing meals.
According to the groups, tackling unhealthy diets requires both personal lifestyle changes and stronger government policies that promote healthier food environments.
