Tegbe Denies Claim of 100-Day Power Grid Fix Promise

Nigeria’s Minister-designate for Power, Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has refuted reports claiming he pledged to fix the country’s struggling national power grid within 100 days, saying the reports misrepresented his remarks.

In a statement issued on Thursday through his spokesperson, Adeola Adelabu, Tegbe clarified that no such commitment was made during his Senate screening held on May 6, 2026.

The statement noted that the minister-designate informed lawmakers that timelines for reforms in the power sector were still under development and would depend on technical assessments as well as consultations with key stakeholders.

The clarification followed widespread media reports suggesting that Tegbe had assured senators he would resolve Nigeria’s persistent electricity grid challenges within 100 days of assuming office.

The statement further explained that Tegbe only pledged that initial efforts to stabilise the national grid would begin within his first 100 days, while deeper reforms covering sector credibility, gas supply, metering, and operational efficiency could take up to one year to achieve meaningful results. He was also quoted as saying, “My promise to this chamber and to Nigeria is that Nigerians will see visible improvement in the sector.”
