CNN Founder Ted Turner Dies at 87

Ted Turner, the pioneering broadcaster who changed television journalism with the creation of CNN, has died at the age of 87. The network confirmed his death on Tuesday, bringing tributes from political leaders, media executives and admirers across the world.

Turner launched CNN in 1980 as the world’s first 24-hour news channel, a move that initially attracted criticism and doubt from industry observers. The station later rose to prominence through live coverage of major global events, including the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan, the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster and the Gulf War.

US President Donald Trump paid tribute to Turner, calling him “one of the greats of broadcast history.” CNN chief executive Mark Thompson praised Turner’s bold leadership and lasting impact on journalism, saying his influence would continue to shape the network for years to come.

Outside broadcasting, Turner built a media empire through Turner Broadcasting System and owned sports franchises including the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks. He was also recognised for philanthropy, environmental advocacy and support for the United Nations. Turner disclosed in 2018 that he was battling Lewy body dementia.
