Orodje of Okpe Suspends Controversial Sapele-Okpe Constitution Amendment

The Orodje of Okpe, His Majesty Orhue I, has suspended the contentious amendment to the Sapele-Okpe community constitution and stopped plans to establish a proposed “fifth quarter” after tensions escalated among residents.

The directive followed a stakeholders’ meeting at the monarch’s palace in Orerokpe, Delta State, where community leaders and representatives convened to address the dispute.

During the meeting, the monarch ordered that the purported amendment to the constitution and the recognition of Otonyasere as a new quarter be put on hold indefinitely pending wider consultations.

He also set aside the vote of no confidence earlier passed on the community chairman, Onoriode Temiagin, and members of his executive committee.

The development comes after protests and allegations by some Sapele-Okpe community members who accused the leadership of altering the constitution without adequate consultation with stakeholders.

The Orodje called on both the executive and community stakeholders to engage in dialogue and work toward restoring calm and unity in the community.
