Anambra Reclaims Disputed Oil Wells from Delta

Anambra State has recovered a number of oil wells previously credited to Delta State, according to the Managing Director of Anambra State Solid Mineral Development Company and Chairman of Anambra State Petroleum Energy Resources Limited, Mr. Charles Ofoegbu.

Ofoegbu made this known in Awka on Thursday, explaining that the development followed a verification exercise by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission on oil wells located around the Anambra River Basin. He said approval of the commission’s report would enable the state to start receiving additional revenue from oil wells situated along the maritime boundary between Anambra and Delta states.

He noted that Anambra joined the list of Nigeria’s oil-producing states in 2025 with an initial production capacity of about 3,000 barrels per day. Some of the oil wells linked to the state had been under dispute with neighbouring states, particularly Delta.

The official also disclosed that the state government is working with foreign investors to establish a modular refinery in Osamala, in Ogbaru Local Government Area. The refinery is expected to produce petroleum and diesel for Anambra and surrounding states while increasing government revenue.

Ofoegbu added that efforts are ongoing to reclaim more oil wells currently claimed by Rivers and Enugu states due to boundary disagreements. He said the move would boost the state’s 13 per cent oil derivation from the Federal Government.

He further revealed plans to expand the state’s solid minerals sector, including the opening of a kaolin mining site at Ukpor and the establishment of a bentonite processing plant at Achalagu, Nteje, with raw materials to be sourced from Umuchu and Ufuma.
