The National Data Protection Commission has begun an investigation into Temu over suspected breaches of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023. The probe follows concerns about how the e-commerce platform collects, processes, and transfers the personal data of Nigerian users.
Regulators say the company handles information belonging to about 12.7 million Nigerians. The investigation will examine issues including data minimisation, transparency, accountability, and cross-border transfer of personal information.
The commission warned that data processors acting on behalf of companies without ensuring compliance with Nigerian law could face penalties. Authorities are reviewing whether Temu has met its legal obligations under the country’s data protection framework.
Temu entered the Nigerian market in 2024 and operates in over 90 countries worldwide.
