INEC Fixes February 20 for Presidential, NASS Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed February 20, 2027 for the conduct of the presidential and National Assembly elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, announced the date on Friday at a press conference in Abuja where the Commission released the notice of election as well as the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election.

Amupitan said the announcement became necessary following speculation surrounding the poll date, noting that some individuals had circulated unofficial schedules. He stated that the Commission rejected such claims and reaffirmed its constitutional mandate to set the election timetable.

He added that INEC is monitoring the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act, 2022 at the National Assembly, stressing the need for early preparations to avoid logistical setbacks. Citing relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended, he said the elections must be conducted within the timeframe stipulated before the expiration of the current office holders’ terms in May and June 2027.
