Nigerian Students Emerge World Champions at International STEM Olympiad

Nigeria recorded a major achievement at the Grand Finale of the International STEM Olympiad in Rome, Italy, as three students won four gold medals.

Don Anele Munachimso claimed two gold medals, including the world title in Science, while Onyedikachi Egejurum and Chimdiebube Onwubiko won one gold medal each.

The students qualified to represent Nigeria after emerging among the top performers at the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad. Their participation in the global competition was fully sponsored by education advocate and Educare CEO Alex Onyia.

The Olympiad, held at the Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, featured participants from more than 150 countries.

Eleven-year-old Egejurum was crowned the world’s best in the Primary Mathematics category, while 13-year-old Chimdiebube also secured a gold medal.

Seventeen-year-old Don Anele added to Nigeria’s success by winning two gold medals, including the world title in Science.

Before the competition, Onyia had described him as one of Nigeria’s brightest science talents and expressed confidence in the team’s chances.

The victory comes at a time when Nigeria has faced challenges participating in major international academic competitions due to funding constraints.

The students’ success highlights the impact of private sponsorship in helping talented Nigerians compete and excel on the global stage.
