Nigerian Army Confirms Rescue of Abducted Oyo Pupils, Teacher, Arrests Key Suspects
The Nigerian Army has confirmed the rescue of all 44 pupils and teachers abducted from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State following a coordinated security operation involving multiple military, intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Acting Deputy Director, 2 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, the Army said the victims, who were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, regained their freedom after an intelligence-led operation that lasted for more than one month.
The operation was led by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Major General CR Nnebeife, in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser, including the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Defence Headquarters, Special Forces from the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force, the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun personnel, local vigilantes and hunters.
According to the statement, security forces focused on tracking the suspected kingpins behind the abduction, dismantling their networks and logistics chain, and identifying informants and hideouts within the Old Oyo National Park and other locations.
The Army said multiple arrests were made in Oyo State and other parts of the country, disrupting the group and forcing the kidnappers to unconditionally release the hostages.
The Army noted that the operation was carefully planned to ensure the safe rescue of the pupils and teachers while avoiding civilian casualties. It, however, confirmed that some security personnel lost their lives during the operation.
The rescued victims are currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital and will be handed over to the Oyo State Government for reunification with their families.
The Army expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Seyi Makinde, the National Security Adviser, the Service Chiefs, the Inspector General of Police, heads of security agencies, local security volunteers and the media for their support throughout the operation.
It also urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and continue providing credible information to security agencies to strengthen ongoing efforts to protect lives and property across the country.
