Itsekiri Indigenes Oppose Ijaw Language Bill in Warri South-West Schools
A group of Itsekiri indigenes in Warri South-West has rejected a proposed bill that seeks to include the Ijaw language in the curriculum of primary schools within the LGA. They believe the move threatens their cultural identity and could diminish their political influence in the area.
In a petition addressed to Itsekiri councillors and political leaders, Tuale Aderojo, Neye Golly and Ogbite Aburu argued that the proposal was initiated without any consultation. They said it reflects an ongoing pattern of political missteps that continue to undermine the Itsekiri community and warned that the plan could erode their standing in their ancestral territory.
The petitioners called for an immediate summit of Itsekiri leaders to craft a unified response. They faulted what they see as recurring silence and inaction from those elected to protect Itsekiri interests.

They urged the community to embrace stronger leadership, develop a clearer political strategy and build a new generation of Itsekiri defenders. In their view, only proactive measures can preserve the community’s cultural future.
