Death of Young NYSC Doctor from Delta Sparks Outrage
The death of Dr. Wisdom Oghenetega Enakirerhi, a 25-year-old medical doctor from Delta State serving under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has triggered widespread grief and renewed calls for reforms in the scheme’s handling of medical emergencies involving corps members.
Dr. Enakirerhi reportedly died after battling a serious illness, with concerns mounting over the delay in approving his request for sick leave.
According to accounts of the incident, the young doctor became critically ill while serving at his place of primary assignment and repeatedly sought a three-week medical leave to enable him receive treatment. However, his request was reportedly not approved immediately.
His family, including his father and brother, who are both medical doctors, reportedly appealed to the relevant authorities to allow him return home for proper medical care, but their requests were initially declined.
His leave was eventually approved on June 26, 2026. He returned home to Delta State in critical condition and passed away just three days later, on June 29.
The circumstances surrounding his death have sparked widespread reactions on social media and among members of the medical community, with many Nigerians questioning the administrative process for handling health-related emergencies involving corps members.
