Anioma State Now Within Constitutional Process — Nwoko Tells Igbanke Monarchs
Senator Ned Munir Nwoko has reiterated that the campaign for the creation of Anioma State has advanced into Nigeria’s formal constitutional process, stressing that it is no longer a theoretical aspiration. He spoke during a consultative meeting with traditional rulers and stakeholders from Igbanke who visited him to engage on the status of the proposal.
The Igbanke delegation was led by the Obi of Oligie, HRM Obi Lucky Chukwukama Osunde, with other monarchs in attendance including HRM Edobor Uwaifo, PhD, Obi of Omolua Igbanke; HRM Dr. Julius Chukwuyem Isitor, Obi of Ottah; and HRM Dr. Ngozi Otabor Ogiebor, Obi of Idumodin Igbanke. Prominent chiefs and community representatives also joined the discussions.
Nwoko told the gathering that key legislative benchmarks have been met, with Anioma officially included in the ongoing constitutional amendment exercise at the National Assembly. He linked the push for the new state to the need to correct geopolitical imbalance, noting that the South-East remains underrepresented in terms of state numbers within the federation.
As a leading member of the Joint Committee on Constitutional Amendment, the senator said he sponsored and drove the bill that reopened state creation debates, adding that a major committee decision in Lagos approved the creation of an additional South-East state. He confirmed that Delta (Anioma) was clearly listed in the committee’s report and expressed confidence in the outcome, reaffirming Asaba as the preferred capital due to its central location and readiness.
