Palm Oil Producers Sound Alarm Over Fake Palm Oil

The National Palm Produce Association of Nigeria (NPPAN) has raised serious concerns over the growing presence of adulterated palm oil in markets across the country. The association warned that the practice poses a threat to public health and could undermine Nigeria’s palm oil industry.

NPPAN President Alphonsus Inyang said adulteration is carried out mainly by middlemen who tamper with genuine palm oil using harmful substances. While he dismissed unverified claims that most palm oil in circulation is fake, he confirmed that the problem exists and requires urgent action.

The association has engaged agencies such as the Standards Organisation of Nigeria and called on consumers to report suspicious practices in markets. Inyang stressed that tackling adulteration requires the support of law enforcement and regulatory bodies, including NAFDAC and the Consumer Protection Council.

He also cautioned that continued reports of fake palm oil could damage Nigeria’s reputation in international markets. According to him, while producers are educating farmers and millers, only coordinated government intervention can curb the menace effectively.
