Woman Arrested in Ughelli for Alleged Fake Alcohol Production
Security operatives in Delta State have arrested a 67-year-old woman, Lydia Osanebi, over allegations of producing and circulating adulterated alcoholic drinks in Ughelli. The arrest was carried out by the Eagle Net Special Squad attached to the Ughelli Surveillance Team during an early-morning operation on December 14, 2025.
The suspect was taken into custody at her residence and business premises on 14th Street, Otor-Edor, Ughelli, after operatives acted on credible intelligence and executed a valid search warrant. Items recovered during the operation included large quantities of suspected harmful chemicals such as methanol, formalin and cochineal, alongside packaging materials, brand labels, seals, super glue, stickers, shot glasses and over 60 litres of suspected counterfeit dry gin.
Police spokesperson, SP Edafe Bright, said the woman admitted during interrogation to producing and repackaging adulterated dry gin with recycled bottles for more than two decades. Preliminary findings indicate that methanol, one of the substances found, is highly toxic and capable of causing severe health complications including blindness, organ failure and death.
The Delta State Police Command noted that investigations are ongoing to trace the distribution network and identify other possible collaborators. The command also urged the public to exercise caution when consuming alcoholic beverages, warning that unverified products pose serious risks to public health.
